Emergency lights are a critical component of a fire protection system. Without lights, how will occupants find their way safely out of your building in an emergency? Even during a power outage, your building’s emergency lighting and exit signs must work as designed.

To ensure your emergency lighting will function properly, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), O.S.H.A., your insurance provider, and your local building inspectors require you to perform monthly and annual inspections. These are done in accordance with the codes and standards of NFPA. That’s where we come in. Our highly trained fire protection technicians will inspect your emergency lighting and exit signs thoroughly and professionally.  We Guarantee It.

Guiding You To Safety

Emergency lights, exit signs, and panic doors are some of the most important safety devices in your business. While fire alarm systems warn us of the problems and fire sprinklers put out the fires, our exit emergency lights are designed to guide us to safety in the event of fire or power outage. These devices are specifically designed to save lives.

The National Fire Safety offers life safety programs in accordance with NFPA Life Safety Code 101. We inspect and service the exit emergency lighting and exit panic alarm devices at each location. This can be independent of, or bundled with, the annual fire extinguisher maintenance program.

NFPA Life Safety Code 101 states “A functional test shall be conducted on every required emergency lighting system at 30-day intervals for not less than 30 seconds. An annual test shall be conducted on every required battery-powered emergency lighting system for no less than 90 minutes.”

Inspection Requirements

Section 7.9 of the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code set out the inspection and testing requirements for emergency lighting, including:

MONTHLY

The Fire & Safety Group is happy to conduct these monthly inspections for you. For your convenience, we are available for free to train your on-site staff to conduct the monthly inspections.

  • 30-second quick functional check and battery check to ensure lights work if the primary power supply fails
  • Terminal connections are clean, free of corrosion and lubricated
  • Battery surface is clean and dry
ANNUALLY

Our fire protection specialists will perform and document each unit annually, including:

  • Fully inspect all components
  • 90-minute drain test
  • Verify charge voltage and current
  • Check recovery period
  • Check alignment of heads
  • Conduct hazard assessment
  • Provide inspection sticker
  • Complete required paperwork

Complete diagnostic testing is necessary to ensure that your emergency lights will operate for a full 90 minutes during a loss of power.  Our technicians always have a variety of battery packs in their vehicle. That way, your emergency lighting system is up and running by the end of a service call.

Please note: Emergency battery pack units are designed to illuminate emergency exits for 30 minutes in the event of a power outage. This allows occupants to exit the building safely. These units are not designed to provide working light during power outages.

Your emergency lighting system, must illuminate the facility at prescribed levels for at least 90 minutes (NFPA 101, s. 7.9.2.1). NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code, also sets out performance criteria for emergency lighting systems.
